Getting pregnant should be an easy endeavor; but it isn’t always. That is why it is so important to to understand the basics of getting pregnant and what to eat at each phase of your cycle to help you achieve your conception goals.

There are four main phases of a woman’s cycle:

Phase One: Menstruation

The first part of a woman’s reproductive cycle is considered the bleeding time. While this loss of blood is completely normal and will help the body reset itself for the next fertility round, it can strip your body of essential vitamins and minerals; especially iron. Without enough iron in the blood, oxygen can not make its way to the organs that need it and you will become sluggish and tired. The best foods to eat to replenish that iron supply is lean meats, eggs, kelp, fish, spinach, and sunflower seeds. Also, eating citrus and melons will help your body better absorb that iron.

Phase Two: Pre-Ovulation

After your menstrual cycle ends, your body enters a pre-ovulation stage. This is the time when your body rebuilds itself, getting ready for ovulation and fertilization. This is the perfect time to beef up your diet with plenty of protein and vitamin E. These vitamins will help to give your cells the energy it needs to prepare the uterus; mature the egg to be released and to provide the reproductive system with the fluid it needs in the follicles to push the egg toward the uterus after ovulation. Some good sources of protein and vitamin E to eat during this important time includes cold pressed oils, sweet potatoes, avocados, leafy green vegetables and nuts and seeds.

Phase Three: Ovulation

Ovulation is the step in the menstrual cycle in which the ovaries release a mature egg for fertilization. Having the right nutrients in your body to nourish that embryo is extremely important to achieving a healthy pregnancy. During this important phase of a woman’s cycle it is important to make sure that your body has plenty of these vital nutrients:

  • B- Vitamins: essential to egg release and implantation
  • Zinc: vital for proper cell division as well as hormone production
  • Vitamin C: found in citrus fruits, vitamin C is essential for the body to produce sufficient amounts of progesterone needed for ovulation.

Taking a whole food based prenatal multivitamin like Baby and Me will help to make sure you are getting enough of these nutrients in addition to your diet.

Phase Four: Implantation

Once a female egg is released from the ovaries and pushed forward through the fallopian tubes it can be fertilized by an awaiting sperm. Then it continues on its journey to the uterus where it can implant and be nurtured throughout the next 39-40 weeks of pregnancy. Bromelain,(found in pineapple) is a very important mineral for creating the type of thick nurturing lining in the uterus to welcome a fertilized egg.

The basics of getting pregnant require understanding the four stages of a menstrual cycle and doing what is necessary to make each phase work properly. This includes eating just the right kind of foods during each stage to encourage ovulation, fertilization and finally implantation, to increase your chances of achieving true conception success.
